What is the European Capital of Culture?
The European Capital of Culture programme is one of the most prestigious cultural programmes of the European Union, which aims to highlight Europe’s cultural richness, diversity, and the sense of community within Europe, thus contributing to a closer cooperation and a better understanding of European peoples.
The activities proposed by the applicant cities in the framework of the European Capital of Culture aim to broaden cultural offerings, increase their diversity, and foster their European dimension through international cooperation. They strive to enhance the access to and participation in culture, strengthen the performance of the cultural sector and also its connections to other sectors, change the city’s image, and raise its visibility and profile on an international scale.
One city in Hungary and one in the United Kingdom designated in 2023
This honourable title is awarded to two, exceptionally three European cities each year. The European Capital of Culture is designated for the period of one calendar year. In 2023, one city in Hungary and one in the United Kingdom will be designated for the ECoC.
Cities interested in this opportunity need to apply officially for the programme. The Ministry of Human Capacities in Hungary, with the support of a panel of independent EU experts in the field of culture, will select those Hungarian cities which are eligible for the title.
The panel may also suggest which city could be entitled to Melina Mercouri Prize of EUR 1,500,000.
The application process has two rounds. The deadline for the first pre-selection round is December 20, 2017. The panel agrees on a short list of two or three cities, which are then asked to submit more detailed applications. The final decision is expected by early 2019.
