Greetings

Dear Visitors!

We, the citizens of Veszprém are eager to present our city to the world in 2023 as it has never been showed before.

Veszprém and the Balaton region are applying jointly for the European City of Culture 2023 title, in the hope of having the opportunity to represent the wide range of the Hungarian cultural heritage to other European nations. We hand over the history and the culture of our thousand-year-old town as an open book to our visitors.

The identity and the everyday life of the citizens of Veszprém and its surroundings are still etermined by the history, culture, science and arts of the City of Queens. We are eager to present the true side of Veszprém.

The identity and the everyday life of the citizens of Veszprém and its surroundings are still etermined by the history, culture, science and arts of the City of Queens. We are eager to present the true side of Veszprém.

However, the “real Veszprém” is not just the sum of its buildings and squares – we ourselves are the city! We, the citizens of Veszprém have shaped our settlement for centuries, until it became the city that we know today.

The European and Hungarian dimensions of Veszprém, the city and its region are unique; their rich cultural heritage is a value that we would love to share with others.

Getting familiar with each other’s traditions, culture and values is what makes us truly European, and our future can only be preserved as a living community of its citizens.

Our application focuses on preserving, augmenting and sharing our cultural values, as well as on reacting to various challenges and difficulties with cultural urban development tools. We realised that culture is not only the preservation of our traditions, but also a key to a long-term development.

The rebuilding of Séd Valley as well as the recent development of the cultural institutions system in Veszprém are steps towards long-term development.

The title of the European Capital of Culture should last not only for a year. Our application represents a city and a region that are aware of the importance of their historical traditions, and at the same time are committed to enhancing their cultural values.

We believe that only those investments and developments should be accomplished by 2023 whose sustainability is ensured. In 2023, we would like to present the future’s Veszprém to the world.

Balaton and Veszprém traditionally live together, and we would like to see this cooperation in tourism all over the year. The future of Veszprém, Bakony and Lake Balaton must be developed together. A good opportunity for this is offered by the ECC application and the related development process that started short ago and lasts until 2023.

We believe that this region is a safe place to live in, and at the same time it has the potential to become world-wide known.

We present our city and the Balaton region as an open book that can be edited by any of Veszprém’s citizens with a personal story. We also let the visitors get an insight into our everyday life.

We would like to show Veszprém to every European and look forward to meeting all Europeans in Veszprém in 2023!
